What double VPN actually is

Double VPN, also called multi-hop, sends your traffic through two VPN servers in sequence instead of one, encrypting it for each leg. Your data enters server one, which knows your IP address but not your final destination, then travels to server two, which knows the destination but not who you are. Only after the second hop does traffic exit to the open internet, wearing the second server's address.

What it protects against

The design defeats single-point observation. If an adversary watches or compromises the exit server, they see traffic arriving from another VPN server, not from you. If they watch the entry server, they see you connecting but not where your traffic ultimately goes. Correlating both ends simultaneously, across jurisdictions, is dramatically harder than monitoring one server, which is precisely the point for people facing well-resourced adversaries.

What it does not protect against

Multi-hop does nothing about the threats that live on your device or in your behavior. Logging in to your accounts identifies you through any number of hops. Malware on your laptop sees everything before encryption starts. Phishing works identically. And you still trust the single provider operating both servers, so double VPN through an unaudited company is two hops of the same question mark. It narrows network-level exposure; it does not upgrade your overall security posture.

The speed trade-off

Everything that makes multi-hop private makes it slow: two encryption passes, two servers of load, and a routing path chosen for privacy rather than efficiency. Expect a clearly noticeable cut to speed and added latency compared with a normal connection, which is why nobody should stream or game through it. The sensible pattern is surgical: multi-hop for the sensitive session, single-hop for everything else in your day.

Who actually needs it

Journalists protecting sources, activists and dissidents under surveillance-heavy regimes, lawyers and researchers handling material that attracts state-level interest: these are the multi-hop constituencies. For everyday privacy, streaming, and public wifi, a single audited server already covers the realistic threats, and the second hop buys latency rather than meaningful safety.
