A VPN, or virtual private network, creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and a server run by the VPN company, then sends your internet traffic through it. Two things follow. Nobody between you and that server, not the coffee shop wifi, not your ISP, can read your traffic. And every website you visit sees the server's IP address instead of yours, which changes where you appear to be.
How the encryption part works
When you connect, the VPN app and server agree on encryption keys, and from then on everything leaving your device is scrambled until it reaches the server. Your ISP still sees that you are connected to a VPN and how much data flows, but not which sites you visit or what you do there. The website at the other end serves you normally; it just addresses its response to the VPN server rather than your home connection.
What IP masking changes in practice
Your IP address is a rough home address for the internet: it reveals your approximate location and links your activity across sites. Borrowing the VPN server's IP breaks that linkage. Sites infer you are wherever the server is, which is how people watch regional streaming catalogs, test geo-specific prices, or simply stop broadcasting their city to every page they load. Advertisers lose one of their easiest tracking signals in the process.
What a VPN cannot do
A VPN is not an invisibility cloak. If you log in to an account, that service knows exactly who you are, VPN or not. Cookies and browser fingerprinting keep tracking you across sessions.
