edX is where online learning is most like actually attending university. Its flagship courses, MIT's intro CS, Harvard's CS50, the MicroMasters series, are real coursework with problem sets that expect effort, and its credential ladder is unique: MicroMasters certificates convert into actual credit at dozens of partner universities, making edX the cheapest legitimate on-ramp to a graduate degree.
The platform around the content has aged. Apps lag Coursera's, audit access now expires on many courses, and the certificate upselling became noticeably pushier under 2U's ownership. Come to edX for academic rigor and stackable credit; choose Coursera when you want smoother product execution and career-oriented certificates.
