Our verdict
HostGator's pitch hasn't changed in a decade, and it still works for a certain kind of site owner: unmetered storage and bandwidth on even the cheapest plan, cPanel that anyone who's touched hosting before already knows, and phone support around the clock. If your site occasionally gets a traffic spike and you don't want to think about resource caps, the Gator forgives.
It's also showing its age. Our monitored uptime of 99.96% is acceptable but bottom of this list, load times were the slowest of our six picks, and the checkout gauntlet of upsells rivals Bluehost's. Real backups cost extra too. It earns its spot on flexibility and price, not on performance.
